Üsküdar Hacı Bedel Mosque

Year: 2020-21
Area: 1.300 m2
Client: Kalyon Holding

The renovation of Hacı Bedel Mustafa Efendi Mosque in Üsküdar is grounded in the principle of opening the existing front and side courtyards to the public realm, establishing a series of layered open prayer spaces that extend towards the adjacent square.

Taking advantage of its corner plot condition, the expanded courtyard and the semi-open prayer areas are complemented by generous eaves, enabling the mosque precinct to operate in continuity with the municipal square as a shared gathering ground.

The project also reinterprets the mosque’s minaret as part of its contemporary expression, while within the interior, walls are articulated through an abstracted pattern language that evokes the effect of ornamentation without direct historical imitation.
