Located in Üsküdar–Valide-i Atik, at the intersection of Kartal Baba Street and Çavuşdere Street, Mustafa Kavsar Baba Mosque was originally commissioned in the 1650s by Kavsarazâde Mustafa Dede. The single-minaret, single-balcony mosque—also known as Kavsara Mustafa Efendi Mosque—underwent several phases of repair and reconstruction over time. It was restored approximately 58–60 years after its construction by the founder’s grandson in 1125 (1713), and later revived in 1257 (1841) under the patronage of Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan, mother of Sultan Abdülmecid. The inscription commemorating this restoration, authored by Şair Şeyh Muhtar Efendi, was originally positioned above the entrance and is today located at the base of the minaret. In 1998, the mosque was reconstructed in reinforced concrete, forming its present-day condition.
The renovation and design approach reconsiders the mosque through its early association with a tekke, aiming to evoke a sense of domesticity—an “interior of dwelling”—through the use of timber and restrained detailing. Rather than relying on direct formal references to traditional architecture, the project focuses on proportion, material economy, and precision. The spatial composition is shaped through refined structural detailing and an abstracted approach to ornamentation, seeking a quiet yet grounded architectural expression.
