Istanbul Airport Terminal-Metro Plaza and Canopy

Year: 2021
Area: 4.200 m2
Client: IGA Istanbul Airport

The canopy covering the pedestrian connection between the airport station of the metro line serving as Istanbul Airport’s primary urban transit link and the terminal building was conceived as an integral architectural element within the larger transportation plaza.

Combining steel and membrane materials, the design brings together the traces and directional language of the surrounding landscape with the architectural lines of the terminal itself. Along the full length of the pedestrian route, this approach generates an organic and dynamic spatial experience that remains responsive to human scale, avoiding monotony while enhancing the continuity of movement.

As the canopy is also visible from multiple distances and angles along the airport approach, its sculptural presence within the plaza formed a key departure point for the design. In this respect, the organic and dynamic form was developed not only as a functional shelter element, but also as a spatial object that establishes a formal dialogue with the terminal building.
